First steps / Manage users and roles
Manage users and roles
Invite your team, give admin or read-only access, and remove accounts.
Several people can sign in to the same instance. Each account has a role: an Admin changes everything, a Read-only user follows the monitoring without changing it.
The two roles
| Role | Can |
|---|---|
| Admin | Everything: monitors, notifications, maintenance windows, status pages, settings and users. |
| Read-only | See the dashboard, monitors, incidents and status pages, including private ones. Change only their own profile, password and preferences. |
A read-only user sees a Read-only access banner. The New monitor button, the forms and the Notifications, Data retention and Users tabs of the settings are hidden. A change attempted anyway is refused with Your account is read-only: ask an admin to make this change.
The account created during the installation is an admin. After an upgrade, every existing account is an admin.
Add a user
Open your profile menu at the bottom of the sidebar, choose Settings, then Users. The list shows everyone who can sign in, with their role. Your own line is marked You.
Choose Add a user and fill in:
- Full Name and Email: the email is the login. Two accounts cannot share one.
- Initial password: at least 8 characters.
- Role: Admin or Read-only.
Uptime Kotlin sends no invitation: give the password to the person yourself. They can change it from their profile once signed in.
Change a role
A role cannot be changed after creation. To promote or demote someone, remove the account and add it again with the new role. Their history is not affected: monitors and incidents do not belong to a user.
Remove a user
Choose the remove button (a person with a minus sign) on the line of the user, then Remove. They are signed out everywhere and can no longer sign in.
The button is disabled, and the removal refused, in two cases:
- your own account: ask another admin;
- the last admin: the instance needs at least one. Add another admin first.
